Austin ISD announces summer registration clinics for new school year

Austin ISD will hold in-person summer registration clinics at the AISD Central Office and various campuses throughout the summer. These events aim to provide one-on-one support with the new registration process and inform families about school choice options. Staff will be available on-site to assist with enrollment.
Hillside Panamericano Summer Concert Series returns for its 66th year

The Pan American Recreation Center Oswaldo A.B. Cantu and the Neighborhood Park, in collaboration with the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, invite the community to the Hillside Panamericano Summer Concert Series 2024. The concerts will take place every Tuesday in July from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Oswaldo A.B. Cantú Pan American Recreation Center, located at 2100 E. 3rd St.

Trailblazing educator Lalla Odom remembered for breaking barriers

Lalla Odom, a dedicated elementary school teacher, was born in 1874 and earned her B.A. degree at the age of seventeen in 1891. She pursued further education at Waco Female College and Baylor University before enrolling in the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. Her degree from the Conservatory led to a teaching position in music and mathematics at Willie Halsell College in Vineta, Oklahoma.

Austin corporate battle raises $275K for musician healthcare

The annual Corporate Battle of the Bands in Austin raised over $275,000 this year, surpassing last year's total of $260,000. The funds will provide nearly $2 million in healthcare services for more than 3,100 musicians served by HAAM annually. Event sponsors included Cirrus Logic as the presenting sponsor and stage sponsors H-E-B, PNC Bank, and SXSW.
Austin police investigate fatal shooting outside Waffle House on Dessau Road

On June 8, 2024, at approximately 6:01 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a shooting incident in the parking lot of the Waffle House located at 12304 Dessau Road. Upon arrival, officers found Tykeisha Lewis with an apparent gunshot wound. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (A/TCEMS) transported Ms. Lewis to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased at 8:21 a.m. A second female victim was also injured by the suspect's gunfire and is currently in stable condition after being transported to a local hospital.
