The Fannie Davis Gazebo, located at Vic Mathias Shores in Town Lake Metropolitan Park, has been officially recognized as a historic landmark by the City of Austin. This designation was made during the City Council meeting on February 27. The gazebo is noted for its historical and architectural significance and joins other properties managed by Austin Parks and Recreation with this status.
Built in 1969, the Town Lake Gazebo was the first public structure aimed at enhancing the south shore of Town Lake, now known as Lady Bird Lake. The Austin Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) initiated and funded the project. Thirty-five women from Austin envisioned a structure for public enjoyment and dedicated it to the construction industry.
Lady Bird Johnson inspired the project, which began planning and fundraising in 1965. Nearly 100 contractors and suppliers contributed materials and labor to support the gazebo's construction. It was dedicated in June 1970 and named after Fannie Davis, a founding member of NAWIC, in 1984.
Ellen Colfax, Historic Preservation and Heritage Tourism Program Manager for Austin Parks and Recreation, said: "The Fannie Davis Gazebo was one of the first structures on Austin’s hike and bike trail. The Austin Chapter of Women in Construction not only built it but has also maintained and restored it since 1970. We are proud to see this history recognized."
Designed by an architect inspired by Lady Bird Johnson's environmental efforts, the gazebo combines organic materials with modern forms reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright's style. Jesús Aguirre, Director of Austin Parks and Recreation, remarked: "The gazebo is one of Austin’s modern architectural gems, hidden in plain sight." He added that its new status would raise awareness about this unique structure.
