Rett Smith's forthcoming album, "A Weighted Remorse," is scheduled for release on September 13, 2024, through Imperial/Republic Records. This marks the fifth album in Smith's discography since the onset of the pandemic in 2020. Previous albums include "Giving Up on Quitting" (2020), "What the Walls Cannot See" (2021), "Americana Drugs" (2022), and "A Nightly Consequence" (2023). The new album expands on Smith's rock sound and guitar skills, blending his Americana blues roots with elements of shoegaze rock. His guitar talents, well-known from his work with SAENTS, return to complement his solo efforts.

Smith's storytelling style has been described by the Austin Chronicle as "a dark and brooding platter that sounds like Nick Cave raised on Texas songwriters." Billboard praises him for indulging in high-octane guitar riffs and drawing lyrical inspiration from personal hardships. No Depression notes that "there isn't a minute out of the few that we have that feels wasted... Rather, this is self-contained rock with just enough grit to make it roll." Holler acknowledges Smith as having "his finger on the pulse of the darkest edge of Americana and his psyche."
