The City of Austin, in collaboration with CapMetro, has completed upgrades and relocations of several bus stops along the South First Street corridor. The improvements span from Gibson Street to West Ben White Boulevard and aim to enhance safety and mobility for transit users.
Key changes include consolidating bus stops around signalized intersections and protected pedestrian crossings. These adjustments are intended to expedite transit commutes and improve service accessibility.
Specific improvements involve relocating nine bus stops from midblock locations to existing signals or pedestrian hybrid beacons at Ben White Blvd, Lightsey Road, Powell Circle, and Elizabeth Street. Additionally, a new crosswalk has been added, a duplicate driveway closed, and a bus stop moved out of a pedestrian crossing at Oltorf Street, Herdon Lane, and Powell Circle. A near-side bus stop has also been relocated to the far side of the intersection at Live Oak Street. Upgraded amenities have been installed at improved stops.
This project received funding from the 2020 Austin Mobility Bond Transit Enhancement Funds with additional support from CapMetro.
