On March 31, 2025, at approximately 1:51 a.m., Austin police responded to a shooting in the 400 block of N. IH 35. Upon arrival, officers found Rex Johnson with gunshot wounds. Johnson was taken to a local hospital and died on April 3 at 1:15 p.m.
The investigation revealed that Johnson was with his blind friend when two suspects approached them. One suspect assaulted Johnson, knocking him down, while the other shot him. The suspects fled east from the scene.
Suspect #1 is described as a Black male with a slim build and long black hair, last seen wearing a white shirt, dark shorts, and dark shoes. Suspect #2 is described as a Black male with a medium build, last seen wearing a cap, long black sleeves shirt, gray shorts, and white and black shoes.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.
This incident marks Austin's 12th homicide of 2025.
