Central Health, the public hospital district of Travis County, is currently inviting proposals from community partners for a significant initiative aimed at improving food access and nutrition support for county residents. The organization is seeking innovative approaches in three specific program areas to address food security challenges and enhance health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
Megan Cermak, Central Health’s director of public health strategy, policy, and disaster response, said: "This comprehensive program represents Central Health’s commitment to addressing one of the most fundamental aspects of healthcare – access to nutritious food. By combining medically tailored meals, mobile food services, and employment opportunities, we’re creating a sustainable approach to fighting food insecurity in our community."
The initiative focuses on three components:
1. A medically tailored meal delivery service will provide weekly meals to approximately 600 eligible homebound or transportation-challenged patients. These meals will be culturally appropriate and designed with input from Central Health dieticians.
2. A "food farmacy" program will establish mobile food pantries at Central Health locations throughout Travis County. These units aim to serve at least 65 patients per event with fresh fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious options.
3. A specialized program offering nutritious meal services and job training opportunities in the food-service sector for people experiencing homelessness.
Proposals are due by February 18, 2025. Interested parties can submit their proposals via www.centralhealth.net/finance/purchasing. Questions regarding procurement can be submitted until January 17, with a virtual pre-bid conference scheduled for February 6.
