Austin Public Health (APH) has announced that bird flu has been detected in a wild bird in Austin-Travis County. This confirmation comes from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). According to APH, dead birds were found in North Austin earlier this month and reported to state officials. Subsequent tests by a veterinary lab confirmed the presence of the virus.

Bird flu, primarily affecting wild birds and domestic poultry, has been identified in over 60 people across the United States, with one death reported recently. APH advises that individuals who work with infected birds or have direct contact during recreational activities are at increased risk of contracting the virus if exposed to sick or dead animals.

To prevent infection, APH recommends avoiding direct contact with wild birds and other animals. The public is advised not to touch sick or dead animals or their droppings and to keep pets away from such animals. It is also recommended to avoid consuming uncooked food products like unpasteurized milk or cheeses.

In case of illness following contact with sick or dead birds, individuals should seek medical evaluation. Healthcare providers can reach out to APH for more information on testing and treatment options.

For reporting purposes, sick or dead poultry should be reported to the Texas Animal Health Commission at 1-800-550-8242. Reports of five or more sick or dead waterfowl should be directed to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Spills and Kills Team or their 24 Hour Communications Center. Sick or dead pet birds should be reported to a veterinarian.
