The two members of the Tampa rap duo They Hate Change, Dre (he/him) and Vonne (they/them), first met in front of the apartment complex where they both lived as teenagers. Dre had recently moved from Rochester, NY, and Vonne was attempting to sell him bad weed. From the beginning, it was evident that their approach to music differed from most people’s—they are sonic omnivores with a deep appreciation for rare and radical sounds.
Starting as young internet users searching for tracks, Dre and Vonne have been collecting music from around the world and across decades. Their shared musical knowledge is extensive. Once they began DJing on the Tampa DIY scene, they learned how to integrate various sounds into a cohesive style that resonates with audiences.
When they transitioned to rapping and producing beats, They Hate Change maintained their experimental approach. Their latest work embodies what a post-genre musical landscape should be: creating connections that transcend outdated distinctions while encouraging other artists to think broadly and take risks.
“Let the rest of them keep playing by the old rules—They Hate Change will keep changing the game,” they stated.
