On September 5, 2024, at approximately 10:08 p.m., Austin Police Officers responded to a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the 3400 block of South Congress Avenue. The pedestrian, identified as Tony Almanza, a white male born on July 19, 1966, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle fled but was later apprehended. The suspect, Julie K Kotrla, a 34-year-old white female, was arrested for an accident involving death.
This incident marks Austin’s 62nd fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 67 fatalities. By this date in 2023, there had been 63 fatal crashes resulting in 66 fatalities.
