In a behind-the-scenes look at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), Katlyn Fohn, an Airside Operations Supervisor, sheds light on the crucial role her team plays in ensuring safety and efficiency.
“Our primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of the airfield and continuity of airport operations,” Fohn explains. This involves inspecting runways and taxiways, managing airline gate assignments, coordinating with airlines and ground handlers, overseeing fueling operations, and enforcing strict safety regulations.
The division's mantra "Safety, Compliance, and Availability," established by a former team member, encapsulates their mission. The team operates under strict procedures to ensure compliance with safety standards through regular inspections, continuous staff training, and close collaboration with regulatory agencies. They also assist airport tenants in developing safety practices within leased areas.
A typical day for Fohn includes conducting audits, attending meetings about construction projects, and supporting Airside Specialists in tasks such as gate coordination and airfield maintenance. During periods of Irregular Operations (IROPS), the team handles unexpected aircraft incidents ranging from diversions to equipment failures. “Our team often handles an influx of unexpected aircraft and incidents,” notes Fohn.
Fohn enjoys the camaraderie with her coworkers and the opportunity to work with airplanes daily. “It's an exciting role that constantly challenges me,” she says.
For those aspiring to join the airside operations team, adaptability and motivation are key. “Situations are rarely black and white,” Fohn explains. Strong communication skills are also crucial. While a background in aviation is beneficial, it’s not mandatory. “If you have the proper self-discipline, we can teach you the knowledge.”
Her advice for aspiring professionals is to research the airport thoroughly. “Research the airport...and study the associated documents that the FAA provides on their website,” she advises.
To stay motivated in a fast-paced environment, Fohn focuses on the impact of her work on passenger well-being and maintains a healthy work-life balance through mindfulness techniques.
This insight into AUS’s Airside Operations Division highlights their dedication to maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency at one of Central Texas’s busiest airports.
