Troy Alvarado Net-Zero Hero | City of Austin

On June 5th, Global Running Day, Troy Alvarado was introduced as the newest Net-Zero Hero. Alvarado, a blue belt in jiu-jitsu and marathon runner, has committed to a plant-based diet. He participates in Plant Powered Athlete ATX’s gatherings most Sunday mornings where the group meets for a walk or run followed by a meal at a local vegan restaurant.

Alvarado shared his motivations: “I was inspired to switch to a plant-based diet for my health, sustainability, and my love of animals.” His journey began several years ago when he sought healthier eating habits and discovered the benefits of plant-based diets. He noted that his decision aligns with his values regarding climate action and animal welfare.

Living a plant-based life led Alvarado to join Plant Powered Athletes ATX. Through this community, he met Katie, another runner who volunteers at Austin Farm Sanctuary. Alvarado has been volunteering there for over three years.

Reflecting on his involvement, Alvarado said: “Inspiring others to pursue a plant-based diet has been really rewarding... Being plant-based means that my actions align with my values.” He highlighted his athletic achievements as evidence of the viability of such diets for athletes.

The Plant Powered Athlete ATX running group offers more than just exercise; it fosters community support among its members. The group often attends local events together beyond their regular meetups.

Alvarado expressed frustration with common misconceptions about protein intake in vegan diets but emphasized the ease provided by community support and available resources in Austin.

He also discussed what eating pro-climate, pro-health foods means to him: “Through my diet, I feel I am supporting the community and doing my part for the future.”

For those interested in adopting similar habits, Alvarado recommended trying out vegan meals from local spots like Vegan Nom or making simple dishes like tofu scramble at home. He suggested watching "Game Changers" for insights into plant-based performance athletes and sustainability connections.

His advice to others is straightforward: “Give it a try! You might like it and it will probably be easier than you think.”

Plant Powered Athlete ATX holds gatherings on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings that include walking or running routes followed by vegan meals. They can be followed on Instagram for updates.
