CapMetro is gearing up to facilitate transportation for the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas, which will take place from March 7 to March 15. The agency offers various services, including Bus, Rail, Bikeshare, and Night Owls, aimed at easing travel around downtown.
For the duration of the festival, CapMetro Rail will operate a special extended service. On Fridays and Saturdays of both weekends (March 7-8 and March 14-15), the last trains will depart Downtown Station at approximately 2:30 a.m. On other nights of the festival, including Sunday, March 9, the last train leaves at about 12:30 a.m.
A larger crowd is expected on Saturday, March 8 due to SXSW coinciding with an Austin FC home match. Soccer fans heading to Q2 Stadium are advised to use Rapid route 803 or bus routes 3, 383, and 392. Train passengers attending either event are encouraged to be patient and make space for fellow riders.
CapMetro's regular services will also be available during SXSW. The Rapid service operates until midnight on Saturdays and until 11:30 p.m. on Sundays. Night Owls run from midnight until approximately 3 a.m., with boarding available at Congress Avenue and Sixth Street.
Travelers arriving via Austin Bergstrom International Airport can reach Downtown Austin using Bus Route 20 by accessing it outside Baggage Claim near the neon guitar bus stop.
Bikeshare offers access through its network of 75 stations across Downtown Austin for various events during SXSW. Further details about Bikeshare can be found on CapMetro’s website.
To pay fares for Bus and Rail services during SXSW, customers should download the new Umo app as the previous CapMetro app was discontinued on March 1. Trip planning can be facilitated using either the Transit App or CapMetro's online Trip Planner.
