The Austin Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees has announced changes in its composition, welcoming new trustees and appointing new board officers. The board expressed gratitude to outgoing trustees Ofelia Zapata and Noelita Lugo for their contributions over the past four years, particularly in family engagement and special education.
Newly appointed trustees LaRessa Quintana and Fernando de Urioste bring fresh perspectives to the board. Quintana is an alumna of Austin ISD’s Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, while de Urioste is a former special education teacher now advocating for families within the educational system.
In accordance with Texas law, the board appointed new officers: Lynn Boswell as President, Kathryn Whitley-Chu as Vice President, and Andrew Gonzales as Secretary. Former President Arati Singh and Vice President Kevin Foster were thanked for their service.
Reflecting on recent achievements, the board highlighted several accomplishments. These include appointing Matias Segura as superintendent with a five-year contract after a period of rapid turnover in leadership roles. Efforts to boost staff morale included a 7% salary increase for teachers and raising the minimum wage to $20 per hour.
The district also introduced a new scorecard aimed at improving student outcomes in reading, math, Algebra access in middle school, postsecondary milestones achievement, and biliteracy graduation rates. Additionally, a tax rate election was passed to secure $41 million annually for salaries and other supports.
The establishment of a public facility corporation aims to provide affordable housing on unused district property. The board also reported progress under an Agreed Order with the Texas Education Agency (TEA), focusing on enhancing special education services.
Board President Lynn Boswell emphasized collaboration among trustees, staff, students, and families to ensure high-quality education within Austin ISD.
