Frutoso Robledo, a Parent Support Specialist at Houston Elementary in Austin ISD, is recognized for his dedication to creating a safe and supportive environment for parents. His office door, described as a "portal" by Assistant Director of Community Engagement Joy Díaz, serves as an entryway into a world where parents can openly share their joys and fears.
Robledo has hosted numerous baby showers over the years and emphasizes the importance of trust in his interactions with parents. "Being a male in education is a bit more challenging because the majority of the people we serve are women so I have to win their trust," he states. He also sets clear boundaries: “I tell my parents this room is like Vegas - what’s said here, stays here!” adding that it is not a place for gossip.
As a problem-solver, Robledo assists families with navigating various systems—financial, academic, or cultural—and often helps them directly when needed. Housing remains the top concern among families he supports, followed closely by food security and access to medical care. Given Austin's high cost of living, Robledo continuously seeks resources to aid these families.
Reflecting on his work, Robledo shares that even after hours, his commitment does not wane: “In the evenings when I clock out, my mind doesn’t clock out and my heart doesn’t clock out." He hopes each day that he has done his best and prays for strength to continue his efforts.
His welcoming door remains open as he continues to provide essential support to those who need it most.
