Austin ISD students have demonstrated a notable return to pre-pandemic academic performance levels, according to the latest results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The district's scores surpassed those of state averages, peer districts, national charter schools, and the nationwide average.

The NAEP is a biennial assessment that evaluates reading and math skills among fourth and eighth-grade students across the United States. The 2024 testing cycle revealed that Austin ISD not only achieved higher scores but significantly outperformed other comparable groups.

Specifically, Austin ISD scored notably higher than the state in eighth-grade math and both reading levels. In fourth-grade math, the district exceeded national public school averages. Additionally, Austin ISD outperformed larger city groupings and all Texas peer districts such as Dallas, Houston, and Fort Worth in all tested grades and subjects.

Student scores showed slight improvements from 2022, with fourth-grade math standing out due to significant learning gains. Comparisons with 2019 indicate a recovery toward pre-pandemic learning levels. However, eighth-grade math scores were lower than in 2019, highlighting a need for additional support for these students over time.

Persistent gaps remain in the performance of marginalized and economically disadvantaged students. This data aligns with local and statewide testing information and continues to inform strategic efforts within the district.

Ray Hart, executive director of the Council of the Great City Schools, commented on these developments: "The council applauds large city schools for their improvement in academic performance and the progress they are making in turning to pre-pandemic levels thanks to target investments that have addressed setbacks and driven recovery."
