The City of Austin Watershed Protection Department has announced the opening of the 2025 Flood Safety Video Contest, inviting students from grades 6 to 12 to participate. The contest aims to promote flood safety awareness by having participants create a 30-second public service announcement (PSA) that emphasizes the message: “Turn Around - Don’t Drown” when encountering flooded roads. This initiative is particularly important as Austin is located in Flash Flood Alley, where flood safety education is vital for protecting lives during heavy rains.

The contest is open to all students in Austin and surrounding areas, with submissions accepted in any language. Students can work individually or in teams. The objective is to create a PSA that encourages safe behavior during flash floods.

Prizes include a $100 gift card for each of the top 10 winners, whose videos will be showcased at a community event in April. The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2025.

“By engaging students in flood safety, we’re equipping the next generation with tools to protect themselves and their communities,” said Jorge Morales, Director of the Watershed Protection Department. “This contest encourages creativity while spreading a critical message that can save lives.”

Entries will be judged based on creativity, clarity, and overall impact. Winners will be announced at the start of Austin’s Flood Safety Awareness Week, which runs from April 21-26, 2025.
