Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has reached a major milestone in its Journey With AUS expansion program. The Austin City Council approved all major expansion projects on their September 26 agenda, allowing for the design and construction of new airport facilities aimed at better connecting Austin.
The Journey With AUS is a comprehensive expansion program designed to enhance AUS's capacity and infrastructure to meet the growing needs of the region. Key components of the program include:
- Concourse B: A new, 20-gate midfield concourse with modern boarding areas and ample concession spaces. It will be directly connected to the Barbara Jordan Terminal, with anticipated completion in 2030.
- The Arrivals and Departures Hall: A new multistory building north of the Barbara Jordan Terminal that will expand ticketing and check-in areas, consolidate security checkpoints, add tenant space, and expand baggage claim areas. This is also expected to be completed by 2030.
- Landside Improvements: Replacing the Red Garage with a new parking garage, surface lots, improved roadway access, and larger curbside drop-off areas for passengers.
- Airside Enhancements: New parallel midfield taxiways to connect two runways efficiently.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Including a new Central Utility Plant to heat and cool an expanded AUS.
The Council’s approval allows AUS to enter into contracts with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP for design services and Austin Commercial LP for construction of the Arrivals and Departures Hall project. Hensel Phelps Construction Company will handle the construction of the new 20+ gate midfield concourse. To date, more than 20 solicitations have been completed in collaboration with various city departments.
“The work we are doing to transform our airport doesn’t stop at opening doors for more nonstop flights and an improved customer experience,” said Kirk Watson, Mayor of Austin. “This program will infuse approximately $437 million to small, woman-owned, and minority-owned businesses who will join this journey to modernize the Austin airport.”
"Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is a vital asset to our city," said T.C. Broadnax, Austin City Manager. "We are very appreciative of the Mayor and Council’s approval... [and] contribute to Austin's economic growth."
“As we continue advancing... we remain committed... [to] drive economic growth for our region,” said Ghizlane Badawi, AUS CEO.
The expansion team includes diverse professionals from different departments working on enabling projects like the West Gate Expansion set for completion by 2026.
The Journey With AUS program represents an estimated $4 billion investment in modernizing Austin-Bergstrom. Funding sources include Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants totaling over $42 million so far as well as future airport revenues, cash reserves, and airport revenue bonds without using local taxpayer dollars.
