September is National Preparedness Month (NPM), and Travis County is committed to helping residents plan ahead and prepare for emergencies. This year’s theme, “Ready Today, Safe Tomorrow,” emphasizes that taking proactive steps today can save lives tomorrow if an unexpected disaster strikes.

Individuals are often their own first responders in the initial 72 hours following an emergency. Natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, and ice storms frequently disrupt essential services, and emergency responders may face challenges reaching affected areas due to hazardous conditions, blocked roads, or limited resources. An emergency kit can provide crucial support during these critical hours.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s national campaign for September focuses on initiating conversations about preparedness. According to FEMA, “Starting a conversation today can help you and your family to take more actions to prepare. By taking simple steps, you can build your preparedness at your own pace.”

Residents are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts through Warn Central Texas and stay updated with weather information from the National Weather Service.
