NAHB’s Professional Women in Building (PWB) Week might be wrapping up, but the mission of celebrating and empowering women in the home building industry continues all year long.

This year’s PWB Week focused on supporting the next generation of women in the industry, celebrating women in the trades, promoting inclusivity, and showcasing the work of PWB members and councils.

NAHB spoke with 2024 PWB National Chair Luellen Smith, co-founder and owner of Rhino Wine Cellars & Cooling Systems, and 2024 PWB National Vice Chair Carrie DeWeese, an agent with Chinowth & Cohen Realtors. They discussed the benefits of joining PWB, networking success stories, maintaining the spirit of PWB Week throughout the years, and more.

Smith highlighted "the incredible support network that PWB provides," emphasizing that beyond professional connections, "the genuine friendships and mentorship opportunities have been invaluable." She described it as empowering to be part of a group that champions women's personal and professional growth.

DeWeese noted a greater sense of belonging as her unexpected benefit. She found camaraderie within PWB unmatched elsewhere: "I had participated in NAHB councils and committees previously with my husband, but when I found PWB, I found a group...committed to something greater than themselves."

Smith shared a networking success story about Jennifer Tennyson. Tennyson's active engagement at a local HBA event helped expand her business and foster lasting relationships. Her involvement led her to chair their local PWB Council for two years and join MBAKS Board of Directors. In 2025, she will serve as president of their local association. According to Smith, Tennyson's journey exemplifies how "PWB networking can drive business success while fostering leadership."

DeWeese recounted an instance where she received help from fellow members during a complex real estate transaction: "Two different women stepped in to help creatively solve the problem...That’s the kind of 'people helping people' spirit that PWB is known for!"

For those considering applying for a PWB Award, Smith advised not hesitating to showcase achievements: "The application process is a great opportunity to reflect on your journey." DeWeese encouraged potential applicants by saying: "Go for it! Submitting your accomplishments...is an inspiration to others."

To maintain the spirit of PWB Week throughout the year, Smith urged continuous involvement in activities and events: “Whether it’s participating in local events or staying connected with fellow members.” DeWeese suggested getting plugged into local or state councils or becoming an NAHB member at-large.
