In a concerted effort to diversify the residential construction field, industry professionals are emphasizing the importance of inclusivity. This initiative aims to attract a broader range of clients and enhance business outcomes.

In recognition of Professional Women in Building (PWB) Week, which honors women's significant contributions to home building, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) interviewed PWB members Mitu Walia, director of architectural design at Klein Financial Corporation, and Rachel Brown Matthews, owner and CEO of Rachel Brown Homes. They shared their insights on prioritizing inclusivity in the industry.

Walia highlighted the value of diverse voices in decision-making processes. "As we design homes for people of all backgrounds, having diverse voices in decision-making ensures that we understand and meet emerging consumer needs," she said. She emphasized that celebrating varying perspectives fosters innovation and creativity, leading to better designs and more welcoming environments for all.

Brown Matthews underscored the importance of an open-minded hiring process. "As a business owner, I think what’s most important in the hiring process is to make sure you keep an open mind and hire the best person for the role," she stated. She noted that many clients have hired her because she is a woman with a keen attention to detail.

Both women recounted challenges related to inclusivity they faced during their careers. Walia mentioned gender imbalance during her college years and being removed from a project leadership role due to pregnancy. "These experiences have underscored the challenges women, especially women of color, face in the industry," she added.

Brown Matthews reflected on her journey over 21 years in the business. "I’ve experienced ultimate highs and lows... Some had to do with being a woman," she said. She advised other women to continuously seek education and professional development opportunities.

To promote inclusivity within their work environments, both professionals have implemented specific practices. Walia ensures inclusive coordination meetings where everyone's ideas are valued. Brown Matthews believes team travel helps overcome biases by fostering teamwork outside office settings.

Reflecting on changes within the industry since they began their careers, both observed significant progress toward gender equality and professional development opportunities for women. Walia noted an increase in female mentors and role models while Brown Matthews pointed out ongoing labor shortages exacerbated by the pandemic but viewed them as opportunities for improvement.

Their advice for other women seeking positive change includes stepping into leadership roles and maintaining authenticity. "Step forward and take on leadership roles," urged Walia while Brown Matthews encouraged others to be themselves confidently.
