Nicole Quinn began performing music at 14 years old when she bought a used guitar from a neighbor and taught herself to play from a Jewel music book. Her passion for pursuing music as a career took off from there, but her journey was challenged by multiple setbacks.

The music scene in Central Texas is home to talented and passionate local musicians, making Austin the vibrant community it is known for. However, many musicians struggle to access the healthcare they need to continue performing and thriving. For musician Nicole Quinn, this meant spending decades suffering from misdiagnosis and untreated health issues that derailed both her career and life.

In second grade, Nicole was in a car accident that seemingly left her uninjured. Years later, she began experiencing debilitating dizziness that often left her unable to get out of bed. She was diagnosed with PTSD and spent decades battling worsening symptoms.

Despite these challenges, Nicole continued her pursuit of music but faced mounting health issues. A ruptured appendix, four pulmonary embolisms, and a heart attack—all while uninsured—left Nicole struggling to regain her health. Then she found HAAM (Health Alliance for Austin Musicians).

HAAM helped Nicole address her medical debt and enrolled her in health insurance, allowing her to receive treatment for ongoing serious and basic health needs. HAAM also helped Nicole solve the issue of her long-standing PTSD misdiagnosis. After participating in HAAM’s hearing clinic run by Estes Audiology, Nicole learned that her perfect pitch had masked years of hearing loss. More importantly, an audiologist identified that damage to Nicole’s inner ear was causing her dizzy spells. Following up with an ENT specialist allowed Nicole to establish the correct treatment.

With her health restored, this May, Nicole released her first full album—a testament to her resilience and the power of HAAM’s support. HAAM provides access to affordable healthcare for over 3,100 musicians every year. Stories like Nicole’s highlight the importance of their work and why support is critical.

Nicole has just released a new EP titled “SAD G!RL F.M.” on Retsuo Records, produced by HAAM member Timothy "Guilla" Russell.
