The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday, May 27, 2024, at 12501 Tech Ridge Boulevard.

At approximately 1:34 a.m., Austin 9-1-1 received a call reporting a disturbance in the 12500 block of Tech Ridge Boulevard. The caller described hearing neighbors arguing, glass shattering, and items being thrown. The disturbance was reportedly between a male and a female and had been ongoing for about ten minutes.

A second 9-1-1 call indicated continued yelling, screaming, banging, and calls for help. The caller mentioned hearing a female screaming for help and a male yelling as the disturbance moved onto the patio and back inside the residence.

The first APD officer arrived on scene at approximately 1:45 a.m. Upon arrival, officers were flagged down by a female who directed them to the apartment where the disturbance was occurring.

At approximately 1:48 a.m., officers heard noises from the apartment. They knocked and announced their presence in English and Spanish but received no response. Due to concerns for life preservation, officers forced entry through the front door.

Inside, officers encountered another closed door which they also forced open. They found Ensel Maclare-Urgelles actively stabbing a female victim. To protect her life, an officer discharged their firearm, striking Mr. Maclare-Urgelles.

"Shots fired" was announced over police radio traffic at approximately 1:49 a.m.

Officers removed the female from the residence and began administering life-saving measures to both her and Mr. Maclare-Urgelles. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (A/TCEMS) arrived at approximately 1:54 a.m., providing medical attention to both individuals.

By approximately 2:01 a.m., A/TCEMS transported both parties to local hospitals. The victim sustained life-threatening injuries but is currently in stable condition. Mr. Maclare-Urgelles was pronounced deceased at 3:05 a.m. No other persons or officers were injured during this incident.

The incident was captured on body-worn cameras worn by the officers involved. According to APD policy, video footage related to this incident will be released within ten business days. The officer who discharged their firearm has six years of service with APD and will be placed on administrative duty per protocol.

APD is conducting two concurrent investigations into this incident: one criminal investigation by the APD Special Investigations Unit in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney's Office and one administrative investigation by the APD Internal Affairs Unit with oversight from the Office of Police Oversight.
