As Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) marks its 25th anniversary, Ramonika Carr, the Guest Services Officer who has been with the airport since its inception in 1999, reflects on her journey. Starting as an intern in the summer of 1998 before AUS officially opened, Carr's career trajectory mirrors the growth and evolution of the airport.

"In those early days, I knew everybody," Carr recalls. She began in the Public Information Office (PIO), playing a crucial role in planning the grand opening event that was both a public celebration and a city event. "It was an exciting time, with new facilities and everyone, including the Mayor, involved," she says. This experience provided her with valuable insights into the aviation industry's complexities and collaborative nature.

Reflecting on memorable moments over her 26-year tenure, Carr highlights several standout events. The grand opening remains significant for her: "It was incredible to see the community come together. We were opening Austin to the world." Another notable memory is "Take Your Children to Work Day," which reminded her of her early experiences as an intern. Additionally, she fondly remembers ceremonies involving Girl Scouts retiring US flags alongside veterans within aviation.

When discussing essential qualities for guest services employees, Carr emphasizes flexibility, open-mindedness, and proactivity: "The aviation industry can change at the drop of a hat... Adjusting and thinking about the customer is essential." She believes that small gestures like greeting passengers with a smile can significantly impact their experience.

Carr attributes her sustained motivation to continuous opportunities for growth and connection within AUS. Her roles have evolved over time from networking to promoting behind-the-scenes work. Although she briefly shifted towards air service and advertising—an area less fulfilling for her—she returned to guest services in 2016 where she now oversees over 50 employees.

"Being able to connect with both the community and employees... has been an amazing opportunity," says Carr. Her commitment extends beyond customers to include employee development and satisfaction.

As AUS continues its expansion, Ramonika Carr remains integral to its success story. Her journey underscores dedication, adaptability, and community engagement as key elements in fostering a welcoming airport environment.
