Students from some high schools within the Austin Independent School District (AISD) are gearing up for a peaceful walkout, prompting Superintendent Matias Segura to address the matter and reassure families of safety protocols in a letter.
Segura said that the event is student-led and not officially endorsed by the district. "The stated purpose of the walkout is to call for peace," he said.
Acknowledging the perspectives surrounding the issues prompting the walkout, Segura highlighted the importance of maintaining respectful and civil behavior during the demonstration. He mentioned that school principals will engage with students to address safety concerns and encourage appropriate conduct.
To ensure the well-being of all students, campus staff will be vigilant in identifying individuals requiring special support, while School Resource Officers will be on-site to assist with security measures. Additionally, counselors will be available to provide emotional support to students during and after the event.
Segura outlined guidelines for the walkout, including staying on sidewalks, avoiding disrupting the educational environment, and following attendance procedures. He noted that families will be notified if their child is absent or tardy due to participation in the walkout.
