Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas has expressed his unwavering support for Israel and announced increased security measures for Jewish synagogues and schools in the state. This comes after Israel was attacked by Palestinian militant group Hamas, resulting in the loss of at least 1,000 lives.
Abbott condemned the acts of violence and inhumanity against Israel and its people, calling the terrorists "ruthless." In a press release on October 9th, Abbott stated, "I firmly denounce the act of war against Israeli citizens and Americans in Israel and support Israel’s right to defend itself from these barbaric attacks."
The surprise assault by Hamas occurred on October 7th, as militants assisted by rocket fire infiltrated Israeli towns near the blockaded Gaza Strip. The Associated Press reported that dozens of people were killed, while others were abducted and taken into Gaza on a major Jewish holiday. Israeli officials have described it as the deadliest attack in decades.
Tragically, the conflict has also claimed the lives of nine Americans, according to the U.S. Department of State. Some Americans are among the missing, as confirmed by State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
In response to these acts of terrorism, Governor Abbott announced that over $4 million of additional funding from the Public Safety Office will be allocated to enhance security at Jewish organizations, including synagogues and schools, in Texas. The aim is to provide a safe environment for the Jewish community amidst the ongoing tensions. Abbott emphasized the importance of unity and the rejection of terrorism and anti-Semitism, stating, "In response to these cowardly attacks, we stand united with our Jewish neighbors and we repudiate terrorism and anti-Semitism."
Abbott's support for Israel and the increased security measures demonstrate Texas's commitment to standing with the Israeli and Jewish communities during these challenging times.
