The Austin Independent School District (AISD) Board of Trustees voted to name Dr. Anthony Mays as its interim superintendent on Tuesday, Austin-based media outlets reported.
Austin CBS affiliate KEYE reported that the board voted 7-2, with trustees Arati Singh and Lynn Boswell abstaining, during an overnight meeting.
Mays is AISD's first black male interim superintendent, according to Austin NBC affiliate KXAN.
The move came after the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) formally named incumbent AISD superintendent Dr. Stephanie Elizalde to its top office on Thursday, June 9, KXAN reported.
Mays, who currently serves as the school district's chief officer of schools, will assume his new role at the start of next month.
He credited the AISD community for the latest chapter in what is a career in education that spans more than 20 years, KEYE reported.
"I want to make sure to thank our community members," Mays said, according to the station. "It takes all of us to do this work. There are lots of great things to celebrate here. Thank you all for your faith in me. Thank you to all those HT Rams, I appreciate you all."
Austin FOX affiliate KTBC reported that Mays' résumé includes positions as a teacher, principal and administrator in the Pflugerville, Dallas and Fort Worth school districts.
The station reported that AISD hired him in 2020 from the Harris County Department of Education, where he worked as its senior director of schools.
Mays has three children who attend school in the district, per KTBC.
