CapMetro has announced a major revamp of its MetroBike service, rebranding it as CapMetro Bikeshare. The updated bike-sharing program is scheduled to launch later this summer and will include new equipment, an app, and other features aimed at enhancing public transportation options for Austin's cycling community.
The existing MetroBike services will be temporarily suspended starting July 1, 2024, to facilitate the transition. The rollout of CapMetro Bikeshare is expected to be completed by fall.
"The transition to CapMetro Bikeshare represents our dedication to providing innovative, sustainable and convenient transportation options for Austin,” stated Dottie Watkins, President & CEO. “We’re thrilled to offer these new e-assist bikes, enhanced docking stations, and improvements, to ensure a better biking experience and make it easier and more enjoyable to navigate our city.”
The revamped service will introduce several new features:
- A fleet of 100% electric assist bikes that require pedaling but provide automatic motor assistance.
- Modern docking stations installed at current locations with additional stations planned.
- Enhanced stability through durable bike frames and inline battery placement.
- A new Bikeshare App for easy pass purchasing and management.
To implement these changes, the current MetroBike service will pause on July 1 as existing equipment is retired. Annual and 31-day pass purchases were halted on June 1 as part of the transition process. Current memberships will transfer automatically to CapMetro Bikeshare with instructions provided via email.
Customers are encouraged to register for CapMetro Alerts for updates on service impacts during the transition period.
This enhancement was partly funded by an $11.3 million federal grant awarded in January 2024. Additionally, CapMetro partnered with PBSC Urban Solutions Inc. earlier this year to expand the program.
