Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) experienced a decline in passenger traffic for September 2024, with a total of 1,664,972 passengers. This marks a decrease of 6.21% compared to the same month last year. Enplanements were also down by 6.17%, totaling 825,344.
The performance of airlines varied significantly during this period. Southwest Airlines recorded 642,960 passengers, reflecting a decrease of 6.9%. American Airlines saw a more substantial drop of 16.6%, with passenger numbers at 329,556. Delta Air Lines had an increase in passengers by 17.8%, totaling 287,850.
Other airlines such as United Airlines and Alaska Airlines reported decreases in passenger numbers by 2.4% and 7.2% respectively. Meanwhile, Frontier Airlines saw significant growth with an increase of 155.4% in passengers.
In terms of air cargo for September, AUS handled a total of 23,816,183 pounds which is an increase of 13.42% from the previous year. The international segment accounted for over two million pounds and grew by more than half at a rate of 53.25%.
Air Transport International carried the largest share among carriers with over seven million pounds transported—a rise of nearly fifty-five percent from last year’s figures.
General aviation operations increased slightly by about six percent but combined operations that include commercial and military flights decreased by almost seven percent.
For the period from January to September this year, AUS recorded a slight overall decline in passenger traffic compared to the same timeframe last year; however, there was an uptick in air cargo volumes both domestically and internationally.
Passenger counts for major airlines showed mixed results during these nine months: Southwest Airlines experienced growth while American Airlines faced declines along with several other carriers like Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Airways.
Cargo handling has been robust through these months showing positive trends particularly due to increases seen in international shipments.
