During Hispanic Heritage Month, the mariachi tradition is being highlighted as a significant cultural symbol within the Hispanic community. Susana Diaz-Lopez, who leads a mariachi program at Akins Early College High School, emphasizes the importance of this music in fostering a sense of belonging among students.

Lopez has been guiding students in mariachi for three years since she initiated the program at Akins Early College High School. "I think having that cultural environment involved on campus makes them feel like they belong somewhere," Lopez says.

The support for mariachi programs in schools is seen as essential not only for teaching music but also for building character and leadership skills among students. These programs help students feel part of a culturally rich community.

Mariachi music originated in 18th-century rural Mexico, particularly Jalisco. It began at festive gatherings and has grown to represent Mexican pride worldwide. Today, it continues to enchant audiences globally with its celebration of Mexico’s musical heritage.

Valentina Marquez, a ninth grader who joined the mariachi team this year, dreams of singing the music that has filled her with pride since childhood.

Currently, Diaz-Lopez's group consists of 22 students. However, not all have access to charro suits or necessary resources for practice and learning. Donations are welcomed through their donation page to support these needs.
