On Saturday, September 21, 2024, at approximately 12:08 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a welfare check call in the 2300 block of Brookhill Drive. Multiple callers expressed concern for a couple living in the house and reported that a subject named Kyler Monaghan was refusing to let them see the couple.
Officers made contact with Chevy Kyler Monaghan in the driveway of the residence. Mr. Monaghan informed them that his grandparents were inside the residence and were unharmed. Officers obtained a key to access the residence and found Mr. Monaghan’s grandparents, Shari Mallory-Maxa and Anthony Maxa, deceased in the hallway with apparent gunshot wounds.
Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists responded to process the scene and interview witnesses. The investigation revealed that Mr. Monaghan shot and killed his grandparents in the residence.
Mr. Monaghan has been charged with Capital Murder and was booked into the Travis County Jail.

This case is being investigated as Austin's 44th and 45th homicide of 2024.
