The Salvation Army's Austin Area Command is urging volunteers to assist in tutoring children at The Rathgeber Center for Families and The Austin Shelter for Women and Children. Volunteers will collaborate with the organization’s child program manager and classroom teacher to aid students with homework, reading skills, and other activities.

According to a post by The Salvation Army Austin Area Command on Feb. 22, the organization's tutoring volunteers act as mentors, fostering a positive environment for the children residing in one of its shelters.

"By dedicating your time and skills to assisting with homework, reading skills, and various enrichment activities, you can make a lasting impact on the lives of these young individuals. Working alongside our staff, you can help these students build confidence, improve their academic performance, and develop important skills that will serve them well in the future," said The Salvation Army in the post.

The Salvation Army regulates volunteer roles to ensure the safety and well-being of the children, according to the post. All potential volunteers must have passed a background check and completed "Safe from Harm Training." Interested volunteers may visit: doingmostgood.org/tutor to fill out an interest form.

As stated on its website, The Salvation Army Austin Area Command assists families with children who are experiencing homelessness. It provides shelter, meals, and resources to families in need. These resources are provided on-site at both locations and include child and family therapy, rehousing programs, assistance with employment/education opportunities, computers and various activities designed for both children and parents.

The Salvation Army is identified as the largest nonprofit provider of family emergency shelter in central Texas on its website. Serving more than 12,000 people annually, it offers a variety of support including shelter, addiction rehabilitation, clothing, meals, holiday support, and direct client assistance.
