The leader of a Central Texas public school district said on Monday that he’s retiring in June, according to reports from Austin-based media outlets.

Georgetown Independent School District (GISD) Superintendent Dr. Fred Brent’s intent to retire was approved by school board members on Monday.

His official last day on the job is June 30.

“I’ve had the honor of serving students, educators and communities in public education for 32 years, and the last nine years as the superintendent of Georgetown have been the highlight of my career,” Brent said, per Austin NBC affiliate KXAN. “I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of this work and to work with amazing people along the way. I am blessed that my family and I will be able to continue to call Georgetown, Texas home.”

KXAN reported that GISD designated Brent superintendent emeritus – effective from May 1 to June 30 – as part of the leadership transition process.

The district will use the time window to name an interim superintendent while Brent will serve as an advisor to the leadership team as it conducts a search for a new head, according to the station.

GISD named Brent its superintendent in 2014.

GISD Board President Elizabeth McFarland praised Brent for his work during what she described as “a period of transformative growth in Georgetown,” Austin CBS affiliate KEYE reported

“There’s no better person to have been at the helm,” McFarland said, KEYE reported. “He has built a solid foundation and a strong team of leaders to continue the work of achieving our vision and mission, and he set the conditions for success for our next superintendent. I am thrilled for him and his family as they venture into the next chapter of their lives, and I am deeply appreciative of the hard work he has done over the years for our students, staff and community.”

According to his biography on GISD’s website, Brent previously served as the superintendent of the Alvin Independent School District (AISD) in the Houston area and the Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District (ASCISD) near Bryan-College Station.

He’s a married father of three.
