A former member of one of the most popular boy bands of the last decade will be the focal point of a new class at Texas State University in San Marcos, Austin-based media outlets reported.
Starting in the spring 2023 semester, students enrolled in "Harry Styles and the Cult of Celebrity" will learn about “the modern celebrity” with emphasis on the former designated One Direction frontman, per Austin ABC affiliate KVUE.
The class will be taught in the school’s Honors College by Louie Dean Valencia, an associate professor of digital history, KVUE reported.
“This is what tenure looks like,” Valencia said in a tweet. “Let's gooooo!”
According to Austin NBC affiliate KXAN, Valencia himself is a fan of Styles since the latter was ruling the charts and selling out stadiums with One Direction.
He told the station that he had the chance to visit the star’s hometown and his fashion exhibit – and, of course – caught a live show of the recent “Love on Tour.”
“As an historian, I want the class to get to really see how the world has changed in the last 12 years or so, but also how to put that into historical context, through the lens of Harry Styles, and how they can learn from him and his art, activism and philosophy, like any great artist,” Valencia said, according to the station.
KVUE reported that Valencia explained to a user who replied to his tweet that the course won’t delve into Styles’ personal life but just “his art and public activism” and various mediums the singer has acknowledged as influential.
According to KXAN, the class – which originated from a peer-reviewed 23-page proposal – will have students do everything from listen to Styles’ music to record a podcast.
The station reported that enrollment will begin in the fall.
KVUE reported that the 28-year-old Styles will call the city’s new Moody Center home from Sept. 25 to Oct. 2 as part of his current tour.
More than half a decade into his solo career, Styles has earned 42 awards from 119 nominations.
His latest album, "Harry’s House," was released in May.
