Leaders of a Central Texas county north of Austin approved a measure on Tuesday (May 17) to boost property tax exemptions, Austin ABC affiliate KVUE reported.
According to KVUE, the Williamson County Commissioners Court passed the item in response to increasing growth in the area.
Earlier this month, Texas voters strongly approved two proposed constitutional amendments aimed at bringing forth property tax relief.
The station reported that homeowners ages 65 and older will see a bump in exemptions from $90,000 to $125,000 while exemptions for disabled individuals will rise from $75,000 to $125,000.
Williamson County Precinct 2 Commissioner Cynthia Long crafted the measure, according to KVUE.
“Williamson County has seen tremendous growth in property values this past year, so it was important to the commissioners court that we do what we can in order to lessen the tax burden on our homeowners to combat rising home values," Long said, per the station. "It is my hope that other taxing entities in the county will look closely at increasing their exemptions as well.”
County commissioners additionally raised property tax exemptions for all homeowners from nearly 2% of their homestead's assessed value to 5%, KVUE reported.
According to the station, homeowners seeking the exemption must apply – which is free of charge – through the county's appraisal district.
