The world's top-ranked golfer is also the winner of the sport's most prestigious tournament. Austin ABC affiliate KVUE reported that University of Texas alum Scottie Scheffler emerged the winner of the 2022 Masters on Sunday (April 10).
The 25-year-old Scheffler, who was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and raised in Dallas, earned the coveted green jacket with a three-stroke victory, KVUE reported.
He joins Ben Crenshaw and Jordan Spieth as the third Longhorn to win at Augusta, Georgia, Austin NBC affiliate KXAN reported.
KVUE reported that Scheffler bested his closest competitor in Rory McIlroy.
The Masters victory occurred just two months after he won his first PGA Tour, according to the station.
As the old saying goes, "dress for the job you want," and Scheffler did just that when he was on the junior circuit, donning long pants even when the temperature hovered near the century mark.
“I never made it this far. It was just a dream of being here and competing,” Scheffler said, KVUE reported. “I can't put into words what it means that I'll be able to come back here for a lifetime."
Another cliché, "the third time's the charm," applies to Scheffler's win as he finally succeeded in his third appearance at the Augusta National Golf Club, KXAN reported. According to the station, Scheffler's playing partner Cam Smith finished third alongside Shane Lowry.
UT President Dr. Jay Hartzell hailed Scheffler on social media, KXAN reported.
“Congratulations to UT Austin alum and world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler for winning the Masters!" Hartzell said in a tweet. "And light the tower!”
Five-time Masters winner Tiger Woods also praised Scheffler.
“Congratulations to Scottie Scheffler on an outstanding win," Woods, who returned to Augusta after his 2021 car accident, tweeted. "It’s been a special run.”
