My Plates, a vendor for the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, has reported that Classic Black was the top specialty license plate design in the state for 2021.
"Black and white plates are very popular in Texas. They look sleek, cool and compliment every vehicle color," Steve Farrar said.
The Classic Black design was launched in 2016 as a tribute to the simple black Texas license plates issued in the mid-1900s.
According to My Plates, more than 90,000 state and My Plates specialty license plates were sold last year, with sales of the Classic Black plate generating 21,000. Classic Black is followed by Lone Star Black, which sold more than 8,900 plates in 2021. This design was first introduced in 2008, and ever since its debut, it has made over 111,000 sales, and this is the maximum any My Plate design has made. In fact, right from the inception of this design, it contributed $16 million to the Texas General Revenue Fund.
The last three of the top 5 plates of 2021 were Small Star Black design, Carbon Fiber and Texas Black 1845, respectively. The one similarity between all the top 5 designs is that they all are black and white designs, and they even amounted to probably half of all the plates sold.
