Texas has the most rapid growth of any state in the country, according to a report from U-Haul's Growth Index, with individual Texas cities performing well, according to their index as well.

Strong job markets and low tax burdens were cited as reasons for the Lone Star State's popularity for relocation.

According to calculations by U-Haul's Growth Index, Texas is the state with the most notable growth in 2021. Texas was just ahead of Florida for the No. 1 spot, and the previous year's winner, Tennessee, finished in third.

The company said it estimates the growth in states by considering the "net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks entering a state versus leaving that state in a calendar year."

The numbers come from more than 2 million one-way truck rentals that U-Haul conducts annually.

“The Texas economy is growing fast,” Kristina Ramos, U-Haul Co. of South Austin president, said. “With a strong job market and low cost of living, it’s a no-brainer. Texas doesn’t have an income tax, so families get more for their money.”

Individual Texas cities also performed very well, according to U-Haul's estimates. Five Texas cities were ranked in their top 25 fastest-growing cities in the nation. College Station-Bryan was the highest ranked Texas city, finishing at No. 7. The other popular Texas cities are Grapevine, Austin, Richardson and Carrolton.

Illinois ranked 49th and California ranked last at the bottom of the list. This marked the second year in a row for both states in those positions. Washington, D.C. was counted as a state for the purpose of the study, while Hawaii was excluded since it is not possible to move there using a truck.
