Local real estate development firm Wilson Capital revealed its plans on Monday to build what it asserts will be the tallest building in Austin and the state, per a report from Austin ABC affiliate KVUE

The new 80-story Wilson Tower will rise over the site of Avenue Lofts on East Fifth Street in Downtown Austin and serve as a multifamily high-rise, KVUE reported.

The firm’s namesake founder Taylor Wilson said the project – as part of the redevelopment of East 5th Street – elicits so much pride, according to the Towers Realty website

“Being a native Austinite, it has been a journey to watch the evolution of the city over the last decade,” Wilson said on the website. “We believe it is important to add intentionally designed density along the city’s transit corridors to accommodate the unprecedented level of population growth Austin is experiencing. We are passionate about making a meaningful contribution to the city we call home.”

Per KVUE, Wilson Tower will rise to 1,035 feet and consist of 450 apartments, with work to begin next summer.

The building is expected to surpass the 1,022-foot Waterline tower that’s being built at 98 Red River St., the station reported.

Citing a local publication, KVUE reported that Wilson Capital purchased the property for the tower in late 2021 for an undisclosed amount.

Towers Realty said that the Austin branch of global architecture firm HKS Inc. designed Wilson Tower.

“Our vision for Wilson Tower is to set a new bar in skyscraper residences for Austin that we believe will foster creativity and social connection,” HKS Austin’s Brad Wilkins said, according to the website. “Along with welcoming outdoor terraces and gardens, the tower itself is wrapped in a brise soleil that offers protection from the hot Texas sun and wind while also providing structural strength.”

The website reported that upon completion, the high rise will include amenities such as a pool deck, movie theater and cocktail lounge.
