Taylor Wiseman, in a recent blog post dated April 10, 2025, highlighted the story of Will Shoaf as part of the “People of the Parks” series. This series aims to showcase the connection Austinites have with their outdoor spaces. The article encourages readers to explore local parks and share their experiences on social media.
Will Shoaf moved to Austin in 2004 and discovered a passion for birding at Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park. Initially visiting the park for softball games, Shoaf eventually found solace in walking along the water and engaging with nature. His interest in birding grew, leading him to create an Instagram account, @atxbirdphotos, to document his hobby.
Shoaf appreciates Austin’s commitment to green spaces, which he believes offer an inclusive environment for all residents. Reflecting on his early days in Austin, he recalls attending a symphony at Republic Square Park and realizing he had made the right decision moving to the city.
“Parks in Austin are the great equalizer,” Shoaf said. “They are open to everyone no matter the income level…no matter my financial situation, I can always visit an Austin park with my family.”
