Wheatsville Co-op is seeking approval from the Austin City Council to offer beer and wine at its South Lamar location. This move aims to enhance community events held in their newly upgraded Bluewillow Lounge, similar to what has been available at their Guadalupe location since 2017.
The proposal requires a waiver due to the proximity of The Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. A parent of an Ann Richards student expressed support, stating that while they aren’t big drinkers, the availability of beer and wine would enhance events for many people.
Wheatsville emphasizes that this initiative is not about creating a bar atmosphere but providing customers with an option enjoyed at other grocery stores like Whole Foods or Central Market. Alicia Philley, a co-op member-owner, highlighted that allowing moderate alcohol consumption could increase competitiveness and financial stability.
The co-op reassures the community of its commitment to responsible alcohol sales. All staff handling sales are TABC-certified, with no violations reported under existing permits. Events involving alcohol will be scheduled outside school hours.
This initiative is part of Wheatsville’s effort to transform South Lamar into a vibrant gathering space. As Austin evolves, Wheatsville aims to adapt and thrive alongside it.
