On May 6, 2024, the city of Austin was abuzz with excitement as residents and visitors alike gathered to witness the historic total solar eclipse that graced the skies on April 8, 2024. According to a statement, ‘People from all around the country and local Austinites descended into Zilker Park to take part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.’ The event was made even more special by the fact that ‘Austin won’t be in the path of totality again for another 319 years.’

In preparation for this celestial spectacle, the Parks and Recreation Department, along with the Austin Nature and Science Center, collaborated with NASA to offer a range of programming and activities related to the eclipse. This partnership aimed to engage the community and provide educational opportunities surrounding this rare cosmological event.

As part of the city’s efforts to connect residents with their beloved green spaces and recreational facilities, the In The Parks video series was launched in partnership with ATXN, the City’s cable TV channel. This series showcases personal stories of individuals who frequent Austin’s parks, highlighting the unique experiences and connections that these spaces offer.

Through these initiatives, the city of Austin continues to celebrate its diverse community and the natural beauty that surrounds it. The total solar eclipse of 2024 served as a poignant reminder of the wonders of the universe and brought together people from all walks of life to witness a truly unforgettable event.”
