A member of one of football’s most prominent families on Thursday took to social media to announce where he’ll continue his athletic and academic career a year from now.
“Committed to the University of Texas,” top Class of 2023 quarterback (QB) prospect Arch Manning tweeted.
If the name sounds familiar, that’s because the signal-caller is the grandson of ex-New Orleans Saints QB Archie Manning and the nephew of Peyton Manning and Eli Manning. His father, Cooper, is the eldest brother to the Super Bowl winning field generals and former No. 1 selections.
Austin NBC affiliate KXAN reported that Manning, who is keeping his family’s legacy alive at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans where he’ll be a senior, isn’t active on social media and that his UT pledge announcement was his first tweet on his verified Twitter account, which boasts over 20,000 followers.
The youngest Manning chose UT over national champion Georgia and perennial powerhouse Alabama, Austin ABC affiliate KVUE reported.
Other schools that were on the coveted prospect’s shortlist were LSU, Virginia and Clemson, according to the station.
He occupies the top spot on ESPN’s list of recruits, KVUE reported.
The website 247Sports reported that Manning had just returned home to Louisiana from an official visit to the school in Austin.
His coach, Nelson Stewart, told the website that his protégé is “locked in” with the Longhorns.
“That’s how he is,” Stewart said in the report. “He’s incredibly mature. When it’s done it’s done. Archie (Manning) was that way and (his dad) Cooper is the same way. Once you make a decision you’re locked in.”
According to 247Sports, the Longhorns received Manning’s commitment more than a year after Quinn Ewers rescinded his pledge to UT in favor of Ohio State.
Ewers, who starred at Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, transferred to UT after the 2021 season.
