Germany’s flagship airline, Lufthansa, has announced that it will resume flights between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and Frankfurt Airport on April 8.
Lufthansa will perform the service three times a week: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
According to Austin ABC affiliate KVUE, Flight 469 will leave Austin at 4 p.m. and arrive in Frankfurt at 9:10 a.m. the next day. Flight 468 will leave Frankfurt at 10:05 a.m. and arrive back in Austin at 2:15 p.m. All times are local.
“Austin is our third gateway in Texas, offering not only a connection between two culture-rich cities but also an important link for the region’s ever-expanding technology ecosystem and the global technology hubs which Lufthansa serves,” U.S. – Central, West & Central America, Lufthansa Group senior director Don Bunkenburg, told the station.
Lufthansa will operate the transatlantic flight with the Airbus A330-300, KVUE additionally reported.
Passengers from Austin will be able to connect to other destinations in Europe from Frankfurt.
The route had just commenced more than two years when the COVID-19 pandemic prompted its cancellation.
Austin NBC affiliate KXAN reported that the first iteration carried more than 67,000 passengers.
AUS CEO Jacqueline Yaft enthusiastically welcomed the announcement.
“After a two-year absence, AUS is incredibly happy to welcome back nonstop service to Frankfurt and our incredible partners at Lufthansa,” Yaft told KVUE. “The return of this route gives Austin customers a convenient way to travel not only to Germany, but to a variety of destinations across Europe, Asia and beyond.”
AUS is Lufthansa’s third Texas destination after Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
The German carrier is among several international airlines that resumed services at AUS in recent months.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines this month introduced service to and from Amsterdam that’s slated to commence in the spring while British Airways has been flying between the Texas state capital and London Heathrow since last October.
