Austin FC announced on Jan. 3 that it has re-signed midfielder and captain Alexander Ring to a multi-year contract.

“The future is #VERDE,” tweeted Austin FC.

After the contract extension, Captain Ring is going to stay as a designated player of the team at least through the 2023 season.

“My family and I are delighted to commit our future to such a great club, welcoming city and amazing fans,” Ring said. “Austin FC is building something special, and I can’t wait to get back out under the verde lights at Q2 Stadium.”

The new agreement consists of two guaranteed years in 2022 and 2023 with two options in 2024 and 2025, respectively. Club policy prohibits the public disclosure of the financial terms of the deal.

“Alex is a terrific player with great character and leadership skills,” said Austin FC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna. “He’s a very important player for us and we are thrilled to keep him and his family in Austin as we continue to grow and improve.”

Ring logged 31 starts for Austin, which was the MLS’s newest franchise last season. The Helsinki, Finland native registered four goals and three assists within that span, as well as led the club in multiple defensive categories.

Designated players usually have a higher range of salaries because their contracts are not counted within the salary cap. According to the MLS rules, a club can have up to three designated players and not more.

According to rumors, midfielder Tomas Pochettino might be taking an exit, especially after Sebastian Driussi made a huge impact on the team, and now, Ring is signing a new contract. Pochettino has also been linked with a transfer to Argentinian giants River Plate. Some other signings announced by Austin FC are winger Ethan Finlay and striker Maxi Urruti.
