Texas produced 1.78 billion barrels of oil last year, a total that accounts for 43% of America’s domestic petroleum output, according to a new study by Visual Capitalist, an online publisher of data on global markets, technology and energy.

The Lone Star State’s production numbers easily outpaced second-place North Dakota’s oil output of 430 million barrels, the Visual Capitalist analysis found. The Gulf of Mexico, which comes under the federal government’s purview, produced about 14.6% of total U.S. production, the research shows.

A total of 32 states produced oil onshore in 2020, the report said.

Three years ago, the United States became the world’s leading crude oil producer and has continued to hold that position, the study noted. U.S. oil production now accounts for 15% of the world’s supply, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The nation’s oil output will decline by 11.04 million barrels per day this year as a result of the Texas oil industry shutting down because of freezing winter weather, the report said.
