The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is observing National Pedestrian Safety Month throughout October by reminding motorists statewide that pedestrians are the most vulnerable on the roads and streets.

“As we shift to fewer hours of daylight, it’s up to drivers and pedestrians to adapt and help keep our roads safe,” TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said in a press release. “Motorists need to stay alert and look for people walking, and pedestrians can take measures to be seen by drivers who may be inattentive behind the wheel.”

According to TxDOT, last October witnessed the highest number of pedestrian crashes in 2022, prompting the state agency to continue its “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” Campaign. While pedestrian accidents comprise 1% of incidents on Lone Star roads, they account for 19% of all traffic fatalities.

During the previous half-decade, Texas has seen pedestrian traffic fatalities jump about 30% consistent with nationwide trends. In 2022, TxDOT confirmed that 5,764 traffic crashes involving pedestrians occurred, yielding 829 deaths and 1,526 serious injuries.

To spread the message and raise awareness, TxDOT is using various channels. “According to the release, TxDOT is spreading the message through TV and radio spots, billboards, and digital advertising, as well as walking billboards or individuals wearing sandwich boards,” the release stated. The agency urges drivers and pedestrians to practice safety precautions to avoid potentially fatal accidents.
