The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has approved 22 out of 24 Turnaround Plans submitted by the Austin Independent School District (Austin ISD) in November 2025. The district announced that the remaining two plans, for Widén and Winn elementary schools, require additional information regarding support for reassigned students and funding for those supports before receiving final approval.
Superintendent Matias Segura stated, “TEA has approved 22 of our 24 Turnaround Plans (92%) without requiring any adjustments. For the remaining two plans, they’ve requested additional details before issuing final approval. This reinforces the confidence TEA has in the work Austin ISD is undertaking and is an important affirmation of the school improvement work already underway on our campuses.”
For Widén and Winn, Segura said, “Specifically, TEA has asked us to provide more detail around our plan to support reassigned students and how we will fund those extra supports. Once this information is provided we expect these plans to be approved as well.”
Austin ISD serves more than 72,000 students across 116 school communities with over 5,000 classroom teachers. The district offers instruction in more than 100 languages and maintains a graduation rate of 93.3 percent according to its official website.
The district is implementing several strategies at all campuses with Turnaround Plans:
– Strengthening classroom instruction using high-quality teaching materials.
– Increasing direct coaching and professional support for educators.
– Focusing leadership on frequent check-ins and closer monitoring of student growth.
– Expanding academic and student-support staffing to ensure adequate resources at each campus.
Looking ahead, Austin ISD’s next steps include planning for staffing and implementation for the 2026–27 school year. Revised plans for Widén and Winn will be resubmitted by March 24, 2026.
Segura expressed appreciation to families and staff: “I want to extend a huge thank you to our families and staff at these schools for their continued partnership, feedback and support as we strengthen outcomes for students, while maintaining what makes Austin ISD, Austin ISD.”
Austin ISD ranks among the eight largest districts in Texas and works closely with families and community members to prepare students for college, careers, and life (source).
