This summer, the UpFront Gallery at Creative Action featured a mural project focused on native ecology. Sponsored by Austin Climate Action and Resilience, the initiative involved summer campers learning about Central Texas’ native species while creating art using reused and upcycled materials. The project aimed to raise awareness of how everyday choices impact local ecosystems.
Over 250 students participated in creating gelli prints, collages, and murals that filled the gallery’s foyer with vibrant depictions of local wildlife. This effort highlighted the creativity and care of young artists in imagining a future where humans and nature coexist harmoniously.
The UpFront Gallery explained that the mural represents Central Texas’ three main ecoregions. Through workshops on upcycled print and collage techniques, students learned practices to maintain biodiversity in Austin. “We hope that this will foster a passion for the environment and understanding in future adults about how they can keep our native species safe throughout their lifetime,” shared the gallery.
The City of Austin supported this educational art project through its sponsorship program, encouraging young people to engage with environmental issues creatively.
