April marks Volunteer Appreciation Month, and Austin ISD is taking the opportunity to acknowledge the significant contributions of volunteers like Sarah Syma Swantner. These individuals are vital in enhancing educational experiences for students and offering support to teachers, aligning with the district's mission of preparing students for success in higher education, careers, and life.

Sarah Syma Swantner's involvement with Cunningham Elementary School began with her strong interest in education. Previously a fifth-grade teacher and a mother of two, Sarah uses her background to alleviate the workload of teachers, enabling them to focus more on their students. Her activities range from making numerous copies to assisting with Parent Teacher Association communications, reflecting her integral role in the school community.

For Sarah, volunteering extends beyond mere tasks; it involves forming connections with teachers, staff, and students. She believes in the significant impact of even the smallest tasks. "I just want to help in any way I can. Even if it’s something small, it makes a difference," she stated.

Citlali Rodriguez, Parent Support Specialist, highlighted Sarah's contributions, stating, "Working with Sarah is extraordinary. I have never met someone so willing to do whatever it takes for our school. Whether it's making copies or decorating, she's always ready to help. We're truly grateful to have such an amazing volunteer on our campus. She's a great example of what a volunteer should be."

Sarah encourages new volunteers to start helping in areas they enjoy. "Don’t be afraid to start, even if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing," she said. "People are just happy you’re there to help."

Those inspired by Sarah's dedication are encouraged to volunteer at Austin ISD.
