Austin ISD is closely observing the spread of measles across Texas and nearby areas. Although measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, recent months have seen a rise in cases within Texas.
Currently, there are no active measles cases reported in Austin since December 2019. The district has achieved a 96% compliance rate for the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine among students, which is 1% above the recommended target by health officials.
Efforts to increase this compliance rate include collaboration with Austin Public Health through outreach, education, vaccine clinics, and direct communication with campus health rooms.
The decrease in U.S. measles vaccination coverage below the 95% target has led to increased chances of unvaccinated individuals contracting measles abroad and returning to the United States.
"We remain vigilant and prepared to react to any public health scenario and provide our students and teachers the peace of mind necessary to succeed academically," stated Austin ISD.
